My name is Alex Mielke and I am an Intervention Specialist at Yorktown MS. I work with students with learning disabilities, specifically in reading. Currently, I have about 30 students I’m working with on reading goals who are 3 or more grade levels behind, ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd grade level. Each student needs a lot of support and the most beneficial thing for them is to practice reading 1-1. Unfortunately, time does not permit for me to be able to read with every student 1-1 or even in a small group as much as I would like or is necessary for them to make significant progress. In the past, I have felt discouraged by the lack of student progress, frustrated at the educational system that does not always support these students’ success, and angry because of the injustice seen in literacy statistics. 

This year, the Lord is reminding me of His heart for these students, how He cares so much more than I do, and how He has a solution. I’ve looked for the solution in the education system and even in outside programs in the past, but He reminded me that His solution is His Body. He reminded me that the harvest is plentiful and the laborers are few, so to ask Him for more laborers in His harvest field. Students at Yorktown not only need support in reading but so many students are hungry for and need a revelation of Jesus. This is an opportunity to be Jesus’ hands and feet in a practical way. The school is a plentiful harvest, just waiting for laborers to come and be a part of the Lord’s inheritance and reward.

I am looking for 30 volunteers to commit to coming about once a week for 45 minutes where you will be paired with a specific student who you will read with. Everything will be provided for you to work with the student, and you can come any day of the week with 3 different time slots available.
