  • Steve murphy

    lead minister

Our family has been incredibly blessed to be part of the Discover family since 2004 (and also 1991-2000 and 1986-1988)! I decided to follow Jesus when I was 9, and have been following Him imperfectly since then. I'm very grateful for and blessed by my wonderful wife, Theresa, our fantastic children and their spouses, our grandsons, and our “grand-dogs”. I enjoy family, friends, laughter, thoughtful dialogue, trying new things, fixing stuff (or attempting to), music, good movies, and a bit of British television.

“We'll fill our lives with what we cultivate the most. Plant grace by the acre.”

    -Bob Goff

  • cindy herpolsheimer

    children's MINISTER

I consider it a great blessing that my adult kids -- Calvin, Jay, and Kaylie -- have called DCC "home" all their lives! I have been on staff here since 2007, first as Upward Coordinator, and since 2011 as Children's Minister. My biggest passion is for teaching -- whether that means inventing creative new ways to show Jesus to kids, helping Boy Scouts learn a skill, or just dazzling kids with big words to add to their vocabulary! I love science, and all the cool ways we can learn about God's amazing creation, as well as spending time IN that great creation with my awesome family!

  • tyler bruney

    student MINISTer

I first came to Discover back in 2012 when friends of mine invited me to come to student events. The Student and Worship ministries here are where I came to truly know Jesus and build a relationship with him. I feel very blessed to be in the position to help others the same way my leaders helped me. I also really enjoy books, music, Star Wars, and hanging out with my wife Lizzie.

"All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before."

    -C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle

  • jim brechbuhler

    associate/discipleship MINISTer

Discover has been our family's home since 2002. God blessed me with a great wife, Cheryl, 3 awesome sons, and a daughter-in-law: Andy and Lyndi, Kyle, and Noah. Prior to the ministry, I spent 20 years in agricultural accounting and consulting. Much of that time was spent living in Washington Court House. I am still connected to this industry on a part-time basis. I accepted Christ as a child at my home church, North Industry Christian Church. I love draft horses, cheese, green olives, agriculture, and Holmes county (where my ancestors settled after coming here from Switzerland). This list makes me rather unique on our staff...ha! My first love, though, is Jesus and His mercy. I am an alum of Cincinnati Christian University where I deepened my understanding of the rich grace and mercy God gifts to anyone who takes hold of it.

"Pay forward, because so seldom can we pay back."

I joined the Discover team in 2021. I grew up around the Columbus area. I’m a sports fan of all things Columbus and Cleveland! Apart from playing music, I enjoy running, hiking, biking, and playing disc golf.

“I do not think the forest would be so bright, nor the water so warm, nor love so sweet, if there were no danger in the lakes.”

  • paul griffith

    executive minister/treasurer

I have been attending Discover since 1995. I was born and raised a Buckeye and have lived in the central Ohio area all my life. My wife, Rhonda, and I have 4 adult children. I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors, and doing creative things.

  • Rachel griffith

    communications/global CafÉ manager

Discover has been my home since 1999. Growing up, one of my favorite places in the world was Round Lake! You can probably find me listening to music, writing letters, or doodling!

"As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has -or ever will have- something inside that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression"

    engagement

I am incredibly blessed and proud to call Discover Christian Church my home church. Some of the reasons that we love about Discover are its amazing Kids ministry and its emphasis on catering to the needs of young families.

    technology

I have been coming to Discover since I was little. Through out my time here, I have grown and strengthened my relationship with the Lord. In addition to helping with the services, I have served as a student leader for nearly 10 years. Outside of church I love football, animals, all kinds of board games, hanging out with my friends and of course my amazing wife, Jamie.

OUR VISION

REACH. LOVE. IMITATE. DUPLICATE.

We are a church that REACHES intentionally into the local and global community, developing authentic relationships. // Luke 15; Romans 12:9-18

We are a church that LOVES people wherever they are, especially in their brokenness and messiness, but loves them too much to let them stay there. // Matthew 25:35-40; John 4:4-42

We are a church that IMITATES Jesus, seeking real life change through obedience, being transformed by the Holy Spirit, and following Christ’s example. // Ephesians 5:1-2; Galatians 5:22-23

We are a church that DUPLICATES this process through relational ministry,  making disciples who make disciples. This is the personal responsibility of everyone who follows Jesus. // Matthew 28:19-20; 2 Timothy 2:2

our Core values

LOVE. GROWTH. GENEROSITY. DISCIPLESHIP.

LOVE We believe authentic love is expressed in the life-giving tension of unconditional grace and uncompromising truth, which was best modeled by Jesus.  // John 1:14; 8:10-11; 17:17; Ephesians 2:8, 4:15; Romans 12:9

GROWTH We are responsible for our own spiritual growth, and the growth of God’s Kingdom, which happen only as we remain connected to Jesus, both individually and in community. // John 15:5; Galatians 5:22-23; 2 Peter 1:5-8

GENEROSITY Our time, talents, money, and the Good News of Jesus are gifts from God that are meant to be generously shared. // 1 Peter 4:10-11; Mark 10:45; Romans 12:6-8; 2 Corinthians 8:7

DISCIPLESHIP Followers of Jesus should have an outward focus, intentionally loving our neighbors, serving people both locally and globally, and making disciples who make disciples. // Matthew 4:19; 5:16; 28:19-20; Mark 12:31

OUR beliefs

At Discover, we don't have an official "creed," but these are our core beliefs:

There is one God, Creator of heaven and earth, who exists eternally in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. // Genesis 1:1, 26; Matthew 3:16-17; 28:19-20; John 1:1, 14; 10:30-33; 14:9; Acts 7:55

The Bible is inspired and given to us directly by God. It has no fault. It should not be added to or taken away from. // 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Revelation 22:18-19)

All have sinned and deserve eternal separation from God. It is impossible for anyone to restore their relationship with God by their own good works. // Romans 3:23-24; James 2:10

Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of God who led a sinless life, was crucified, and was raised to life. His sacrifice allows us to be seen by God as holy and without sin. // John 3:16; Romans 8:34-39

The forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit are granted by God's grace through faith in Jesus. That faith is obediently lived out through belief, confession, repentance, baptism, and following Jesus. // Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 10:9; Acts 2:38; Romans 6:1-4; Matthew 4:19

The Church exists to take the good news of Jesus to all people in every nation; to serve the world; to encourage and strengthen other believers. // Matthew 28:19-20; Ephesians 4:11-13, 1 Peter 4:10-11)

Believers should worship God and love Him with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. Christians are to grow in faith and practice as empowered by the Holy Spirit. // John 4:23; Mark 12:30-31; Galatians 5:22-23

Jesus will visibly return without warning to judge all people. Non-believers will spend eternity separated from God, and faithful believers will spend eternity with God. // Revelation 20:11-21:8; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18

Note: We do not wish to post individual documents regarding other specific “issues;” rather,  we rely on the truth of the God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit to address every area of our lives. We are happy to sit down and discuss our understanding of how the Bible applies to any specific topic, and believe those conversations happen best in a relational context. If you wish to discuss something not covered in this belief statement, please feel free to contact any of the Elders or the Lead Minister.

a brief history

how it all started

The congregation that would one day be known as Discover Christian Church began its life as all ministries do: a bold idea. The Northwest area of Franklin County needed a church, and a group of members from Beechwold Church answered the call to fill this need. But they needed a place. The Farmhouse, would be the congregation's first gathering site.

"The property was purchased and many joyous hours were spent remodeling, painting, cleaning, and preparing our grand old house for the first service. This is said with tongue in cheek remembering the time we all came for prayer meeting and Clayton Grimstad, Harold Grandy, and Cliff Purvis were all covered from head to toe with soot. The old chimney had fallen down when they were working on it and the soot was everywhere."

-The History of the Church of Christ on Martin Road

"Many wonderful memories happened in that old farmhouse..."

growing strong

expansion

Over the years, the congregation grew, so the building grew with it. Where the farmhouse once stood, a new building was raised. Then the section on the right was added to it. Look familiar? What was once the new chapel is now the Student Center!

The worship center & education wing

most recently

The most recent addition to the building, the Worship Center and Education Wing, took shape in the early 2000s!

And, we kicked off our Go Beyond stewardship campaign in 2022!

"let us keep on moving for Him."

"We have seen the loss of many of our loved ones, we have had disappointments, but the Lord has always been there for us and made our sad days, glad days. Let us keep on moving for HIM." -The History of the Church of Christ on Martin Road

Let's face it. Things change. Our building and congregation may look different than it did years ago, but we remain a place to worship, have fun, form meaningful relationships, and belong. We're so glad you're here.

Love god. love people.
